About Me
Hi, my name is Michelle Rasmussen and I am
originally from Omaha. I have lived in the Omaha
area all of my life except for the nine months I was
a foreign exchange student in Spain. I am fluent in
Spanish and taught at a dual language Head Start
program for two years. Six years ago I married a
wonderful man named Mark who teaches 5th grade for
Ralston Public Schools.
June 2009, Mark and I became parents for the first time to
a beautiful little girl named Julia. Mark and I
decided to open Lighthouse Learning Center so I
could be at home with our little girl while doing
what I love, working with young children. I am so
thankful to be able to have the best of both worlds,
working in a field that I love and spending my day
at home with my daughter. (and a husband who
supports me!)
Philosophy
Research shows that children learn more before the
age of 5 then they will the rest of their life. I
believe that a child’s first five years of life are
the most important years. I will provide a loving
and safe environment for your child to explore,
learn, grow and have lots of fun. I believe that it
is important for a teacher or caretaker to focus her
day on all areas of development of a child. In my
care I will work with your child in the four areas
of development, Social, Physical, Cognitive and
Language Development.
Experience
I have earned my Associate degree from Metropolitan
Community College in Early Childhood Education.
After completing my Associate degree I continued my
education at Peru State College earning a BA degree
in Early Childhood Education along with Elementary
Education. I have also been CPR and First Aid
Certified for 10 years. While obtaining my education
I have worked in different childcare centers in a
variety of settings. I have worked as an Assistant
Director, Curriculum Coordinator and as a classroom
teacher. After completing my education I worked at
Educare of Omaha in an Early Head Start and Head
Start classroom.
Besides all of my experience working in a child care
setting I have also worked with children in other
ways. I spent many years teaching piano lessons,
teaching Sunday School, teaching Vacation Bible
School and working with children in Mexico on
Mission Trips.
Early Learning Program
I use the Creative Curriculum by Diane Trister
Dodge. This curriculum focuses on the four areas of
development, Social, Physical, Cognitive and
Language Development. Creative Curriculum is based
on years of research and is the most widely used
curriculum in Head Start Programs and Public Schools
across the nation. It focuses on children learning
through play, what children love to do. The learning
environment is full of opportunities for children to
explore, investigate and learn new skills. There are
many different centers in our classroom. We have a
dress up center, block center, reading center,
science center, sensory center, art center, writing
center, music center and computer center. During the
day there are opportunities for children to learn in
large groups such as circle time, music time, along
with small groups where I will be teaching math,
science and language skills. I also will make sure
to involve you as parents in what your child is
learning here. There are times during the year where
I will invite parents to participate in an activity
or send an activity home with your child to do with
you.
Take a look at
http://www.teachingstrategies.com/ for more
information about the Creative Curriculum.

Please contact me to set up a time to talk about all
